  •   Fflam Festival Postponed

It’s not been much of a suprise to learn that the Ffam Festival scheduled for 13th - 15th July in Singleton Park in Swansea has been postponed to later on in the summer. The official reason being that the weather has affected the condition of the park after other events there in recent weeks. There has been speculation however, that the real reason the show has been cancelled is that organisers had not arranged police cover for the event.

The lack of camping facilities, the price of tickets, local residents objections and to cap it all off, rumours that Feeder had never actually confirmed they would be playing at Fflam has left would be festival goers with a bitter taste in their mouths.

The question is, with the summer festival season already in full swing, will any of these bands be available for the rescheduled date?

Refunds will be made available from point of sale- however, the booking fee is non refundable. At least the booking agents won’t be out of pocket.

Think Pink Golf Day for Breast Cancer Care Wales

Pennard Golf Club Ladies Section is organising a Golf Competition in aid of Breast Cancer Care Wales. The event is being called “Think Pink” and will take place on Monday 25th June.

The all day event will have a morning and afternoon tee off. The morning session tee off is between 7 - 8 am with breakfast provided afterwards in the club house. The evening tee off is between 6 to 7 pm and a light tea will be taken before the competition. The breakfast and tea will be provided courtesy of the Ladies Section of Pennard Golf Club.

The entry fee to the competition is £5 all of which will go to Breast Cancer Care. Now for the “pink” bit, all golfers taking part in the competition are politely requested to wear items of pink clothing! There will be fines if you are not wearing enough pink! The winner of the competition will get the “Think Pink” Trophy which she will get to keep for a year until next years competition!

For more details contact the Pennard Golf Club secretary on 01792 233131 or visit the website for Pennard Golf Club

      Australia 29-23 Wales

Wales kicked off the first game of their tour down under, by narrowly losing to Australia in Sydney. Wales made a good start by taking the lead at 17 - 0, Australia retaliated, but it looked like Wales were about to pull off a historic win over the Wallabies as the score was 23-22 to Wales with the final whistle just moments away. However, the final move of the game resulted in a converted try by Stepen Hoiles, dashing Welsh fans hopes of a dream start to the tour.

Painting Sale for Singleton Hospital Cancer Care Funds Raised

The Mary Dore Falconer School of Painting exhibition and sale for the benefit of Singleton Hospital Cancer Care over the Easter weekend was a great success and raised £242.46 which has now been passed on to the Chemotherapy Department at the hospital.

Well done to all those who worked hard to make the sale a success and many thanks to all the visitors who dropped in and left their hard earned cash in return for some original artwork.

The next sale will be in November, we’ll keep you posted!

      Mixed results for Welsh Football

It was a weekend with equal helpings of joy and despair for welsh football teams. Firstly, congratulations to Wrexham for winning their relegation battle against Boston United. Although they could have saved Wrexham fans all the heartache if they had gone into administration before the game kicked off!

Despite a valiant effort, Swansea City missed out on a place in the league one play offs, finishing in possibly the worst position of the table, in 7th place. So near, yet so far!

Cardiff City will have to make do with finishing 13th in the Championship after loosing the last game of the season away at Ipswich 3-1. Despite a cracking start to the season, Cardiff’s promotion hopes were dashed after a poor run of results saw them plummet down the table.

Ospreys in the EDF Energy Cup Final

Well done boys! The Ospreys have reached the EDF Energy Cup Final, after beating the Cardiff Blues 27 - 10 at the Millenium Stadium last week. Now the Leicester Tigers are the only obstacle standing between the Ospreys lifting the EDF Energy Cup! The showdown will take place at the home of English rugby, Twickenham on Sunday 15th April with K.O at 2.30pm.

Tickets are on sale on the Ospreys website, if there are none left online, they also have a phone allocation, so give them a bell! The tickets start from £10 for children up to £40 for adults. The Ospreys are also organising return travel on the day for £5 return when with your match tickets. There are various pick up points between Pont Abraham Services and Cardiff West Services on the M4- save driving all the way to the Liberty Stadium if you don’t live in Swansea.

To help you get ready for the match, the Ospreys are also offering you a discount on replica shirts and hoodies, with 25% off all other Ospreys merchandise.

If you are looking to make your own way down to Twickenham you may want to consider that there are engineering works on the train service around Bristol on Sundays which makes the journey time from Swansea to Paddington 4 hours. You can change at Reading to go to Twickenham, but you’re still looking at an early start to get there in time for kick off.

If that’s not put you off the train or if you are going over the day before, check out the rail time tables at TheTrainline. Thinking of making a mini break of it? There are some hotels and B&Bs within a short distance in the Kingston upon Thames, Richmond and Hampton Court areas. Try Laterooms to check availablity on rooms.

For details for car travel and more directions click here to visit the stadium website directly.

Art Exhibition Helps Singleton Hospital Charity

The bi-annual Mary Dore Falconer School of Painting exhibition and sale to benefit Singleton Hospital Cancer Care is taking place over the Easter weekend. The art group who meet up every week, have been supporting this charity for years and have raised over £2340 through sales and donations from these exhibitions.

The exhibition features works by established local artist Mary Dore Falconer and students from her art school who meet every week, including the internationally renowned MB Rowlands. There will watercolours and oil paintings on show, plus other greetings cards with photos of local sites.

10% of sales will go to Singleton Hospital Cancer Care and if you don’t spot anything you would like to buy, you can make a donation instead!

There is free admission with free tea, coffee and biscuits- just drop in a couple of pounds into the donation jar! Still cheaper than a coffee shop, plus you get to enjoy original art and help a charity at the same time.

The exhibition takes place April 6th - 9th from 10am to 4.30pm at Gower Studio in Cilibion in Gower, on B4271 near the turn off for Reynoldston. There will be signs giving directions around the area over the weekend, so keep your eyes peeled!

Fflam Festival 2007 Tickets & Hotels

Keep yourselves free from the 13th - 15th of July coz the Manic Street Preachers are coming to town! Over that weekend, Singleton Park in Swansea will be hosting the Fflam Festival. Including The Manics, over 50 bands will play on 4 stages in front of up to 30,000 people! Other acts also include Keane, The Levellers, Feeder and Placebo.

You can buy weekend tickets through the Fflam Festival website- however, at the moment it looks like you have to buy tickets for the whole weekend, rather than for individual days.

If you are thinking of coming to Swansea for the festival you can buy tickets with camping included. If camping is not your thing and you like a nice comfy bed at the end of the day, then why not book a hotel close to the venue? Try Laterooms or Superbreak - but remember to book early as there will be a lot of competition!

The cheapest option might be the Premier Travel Inn and Travelodge, however Swansea hotels are busy at this time of year, so book early. You may find it easier to book rooms in Cardiff and come into Swansea by train, although note the times of the trains as it can be difficult to travel between the two cities late in the evening.
